SUMMARY:GPS for Caregiving by Jane W. Barton\, MTS\, MASM\, CSA
DESCRIPTION:Olinger Chapel Hill Mortuary & Cemetery and Synergy HomeCare are\n\n\n\nhonored to offer a half day educational event to the Denver Community.\n\n\n\nThis event is designed specifically for people who are confronted by the\n\n\n\ndaunting challenges of aging\, illness\, and end-of-life care.\n\n\n\n\n\nGPS for Caregiving\n\n\n\nby Jane W. Barton\, MTS\, MASM\, CSA\n\n\n\n\n\nTopic 1: Moral Distress: Searching for True North\n\n\n\nAmazingly enough\, human beings are born with an\n\n\n\ninternal compass designed to keep us aligned in life a\n\n\n\nmoral compass. Our personal values and beliefs serve\n\n\n\nto calibrate our compass such that each person has a\n\n\n\nunique sense of True North. When encountering a\n\n\n\nsituation that requires us to deviate from our aligned\n\n\n\nposition\, it is our moral compass that sounds the alarm\n\n\n\nthat something is amiss. Due to the increasingly\n\n\n\ncomplex ethical situations in healthcare\, moral distress\n\n\n\nis frequently experienced by healthcare providers as\n\n\n\nwell as patients and family members. The challenge is\n\n\n\nto first recognize this type of distress and then to\n\n\n\nproactively seek a common understanding of the\n\n\n\nrelevant issues. Moral distress can be effectively\n\n\n\naddressed when all perspectives are welcomed\,\n\n\n\ncommunication encouraged\, and a safe space provided\n\n\n\nfor interaction.\n\n\n\n\n\nTopic 2: Grief Savvy\n\n\n\nHuman beings are inherently relational creatures.\n\n\n\nAmong other things\, we attach to people\, things\, ideas\,\n\n\n\ntitles\, money\, and dreams. Hence\, we are consequently\n\n\n\nat risk of experiencing loss and grief as attachments\n\n\n\nchange or end. Mourning our losses requires courage\n\n\n\n courage to feel the pain\, courage to address the void\,\n\n\n\ncourage to integrate the loss\, and courage to re-engage\n\n\n\nwith life. Far too often in our society\, the time needed\n\n\n\nto mourn is not recognized or honored as we rush to\n\n\n\nreturn to work and get "back to normal." We\, instead\,\n\n\n\nneed to recognize the need to mourn our losses if we are\n\n\n\nto move through and beyond our grief. Becoming grief\n\n\n\nsavvy will serve you\, your organization\, and/or your\n\n\n\nfamily well.\n\n\n\n\n\nWednesday\, September 10\, 2014\n\n\n\n8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.\n\n\n\nOlinger Chapel Hill Mortuary & Cemetery\n\n\n\n6601 South Colorado Blvd\, Centennial\, CO 80121\n\n\n\nBreakfast Provided\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister for this free event by Monday\, September 8\, 2014\n\n\n\nTo reserve your seat\, email Tina.Kyte@dignitymemorial.com\n\n\n\nor call 303.771.3960\n\n\n\n\n\nSponsored by: Olinger Dignity Memorial and Synergy HomeCare
